This place located near Nandishwar hill, is believed to be the actual residence of Parjanya, the father of Nand Maharaj formerly, before he shifted to Gokul with his family. Ksunnahara means ‘fasting without food and water’. Thus at this place of Ksunnahara Kund, Parjanya performed the severe austerities and underwent fasting to achieve a commendable son. Being pleased by his strong devotion, Shrila Narada Muni initiated him and gave him the Laxmi Narayan mahamantra to fulfill his desire of having a worthy descendant. Parjanya would chant this mantra daily along with his fasting (without food and water). One day when Parjanya was chanting his mantras he heard a heavenly voice from the sky saying; ‘O Parjanya, soon you will be blessed with five highly qualified sons. Your third son named Nand Rae will be blessed with the supreme lord as his own child.’ As per the divine prophecy, Parjanya was blessed by five most intelligent sons. Among them Nand Maharaj, Parjanya’s third son was blessed with the Supreme Lord Shri Krishna as his own child.
Baithak means sitting place and it has been derived from Hindi word Baithna that means to sit. It is the place where Nand Maharaj would sit along with his cowherd men discussing the important matters, the major being the protection and pleasure of Lord Krishna and Balram. Thus it was his meeting place with his friends and cowherds men. Thus from this place Nand Maharaj would manage the arrangements for the whole village of Nandgaon. Nand Kund is believed to be the place where Nand Maharaj used to have his morning bath. On the bank of Kund there is a small shrine with the deity of Nand Maharaj with Lord Krishna and Balram in his Lap.
