RADHA SHYAMASUNDAR TEMPLE

This temple is situated near the Radha Damodar temple and was established by Sri Syamananda Prabhu Goswami. The original deity of Lord Shyamasundar is considered most sacred deity as it was manifested by Goddess Radharani herself. It’s also written on the main entrance of the temple ‘The only deity manifested from the heart of Shri Radharani.’ The deities of Radha –Shyamasundar were firstly established and worshipped by Shreel Baldev Vidyabhushan who was a Gaudiya Vedanta Acharya.

Syamananda was born in Bengal and earlier he was known by the name ‘Duki Krisnadas’. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Radha-Krishna and often used to cry and dance with the intense feelings of separation from Lord Krishna. On the instructions of his guru Sri Hriday Chaitanya, he came to Vrindavan for further studies under the guidance of Shrila Jiva Goswami. Jiva Goswami was delighted to accept him along with his other distinguished students Sri Narottama Das and Sri Srinivas Acharya. Influenced by his extreme love and devotion for Lord Radha and Krishna and his selfless services, Srila Jiva Goswami rendered him the great service of cleaning the groves within the area of Seva Kunj where it’s believed that Lord Radha and Krishna comes everyday during dusk time and perform their loving pastime of Rasalila. As per his daily routine, one morning when Krisnadas was cleaning the groves in seva Kunj, he found a gold anklet. When he touched the anklet his body sensed a divine power and thus thought it to be a no ordinary anklet and kept it safely with him. Suddenly then a small girl who was actually Lalita Sakhi (Radha’s intimate friend) in disguised form came to him and enquired if he has found an ankle bell, which belongs to her sister and was lost last night. Krisnadas told her that he has found that anklet and will only return it to its owner, so the girl left. Sometime later she returned back with Srimati Radharani, who blessed him with the anklet and touched the anklet to his forehead, thus forming a permanent tilak mark and also provided him the beautiful idol of Lord Shyamasundar (manifested from her heart) to be worshipped along with a new name of Syamananda. Krisnadas was criticized among his men for that unusual tilak on his forehead. But later when Radharani came in dream of Jiva Goswami and explained him the whole incident, everyone accepted it (tilak) as the blessings of the lord and he was renamed to Syamananda. Syamananda Goswami is believed to be the incarnate of Kanaka Manjari, one of the intimate maid servants of Srimati Radharani. The place where Syamananda Prabhu found the anklet is still worshipped and his samadhi is located right in front of the Shyamasundar temple.
