As told by the principle priest of Lord Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, the decision to install the mobile Vigraha (replica) of Lord Shiva (Kashi Vishwanath) was inspired by one of the transcendental pastimes from the life of Lord Krishna. According to the legends, around 5000 years ago during Dwapar Yuga when Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan hill to protect the Brajwasis of the rage of Indra and thus, defeated by the divine powers of Krishna when Lord Indra performed his abhisheka and named him as Govinda, Lord Shiva also arrived at Jatipura from Kailash to witness this divine pastime. Being mesmerized by this transcendental pastime of Lord Krishna, the tears rolled down the eyes of Lord Shiva and thus a lake was formed at the place which was named as Rudra Kund. Thus to honor the divinity of the place the priests of Lord Kashi Vishwanath decided to install the mobile replica of Lord Shiva (Kashi Vishwanath) at this place.
