In his song Bhramar Geet, poet Surdas narrates the incident when Lord Krishna sent Uddhava to Braj with a message for the gopis and other cowherd people of Braj. Uddhava was the great knower of the knowledge of yoga and Vedas and had no belief in the spiritual power of love. When Uddhava reached Braj, he was surrounded by gopis (cowherd maidens) who started talking to him about Krishna and his message for them. Uddhava when saw such a merciful state of gopis due to separation from Krishna, he felt pity at them and started explaining them the power of Universal form of God and told them to worship that Universal God rather than loving Krishna as its of no use to them. He explained them that Krishna is no ordinary cowherd boy who will love them in return of their love but is a Universal supreme God who should rather be worshipped and meditated upon in mind. Gopis, who were completely drenched with Krishna’s love distressfully compared Uddhava to black beetle and told him the pain of their hearts which was beating for Krishna.
Gopis said to Uddhava: ` O Uddhava, we don’t have ten-twenty hearts. We have just one heart which also had gone along with Lord Krishna. So, who will worship your Supreme Lord now ? ‘
